ITR Filing Due Date Extended to 15th September 2025

ITR Filing Due Date Extended to 15th September 2025: Here’s Why

The Income Tax Department has given a big relief to taxpayers by extending the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025-26. Originally, the last date was 31st July 2025, but now it has been extended to 15th September 2025.

Reason for Extension:

  • The ITR forms for AY 2025-26 have been updated with structural and content changes to simplify compliance and improve accuracy.
  • Additional time is required for system development, utility integration, and testing.
  • TDS credits, which are to be filed by 31st May 2025, will start reflecting only from early June. Hence, the window for ITR filing was too short without this extension.

Purpose of the Extension:

Understanding these issues, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to give more time for return filing. The new deadline –15th September 2025– gives everyone a bit more time to think. This extension is intended to:
  • Help taxpayers file smoothly without last-minute hassles
  • Give enough time for accurate compliance
  • Make sure everything is aligned properly with the new systems
A formal notification from the CBDT regarding this change will be issued soon. Read the circular from the department here

Conclusion

This extension is a big relief, especially for those who were waiting for their TDS credits or the new ITR forms to be fully ready. It clearly shows that the Income Tax Department is trying to make things easier and smoother for everyone.

So, if you haven’t filed your ITR yet don’t worry, You have now got time till 15th September 2025.
