How to Check Your TDS Statement Status Easily

What is TDS (Tax Deducted at Source)?

TDS is a simple way for the government to collect taxes on time. Here, the person making the payment, like your employer or bank, cuts a small part of the amount before giving it to you and pays that tax to the government.

Why is this done?

  1. It helps the government get taxes on time before the money reaches you.
  2. It reduces tax evasion since the tax is already deducted at the source.

For example, if your monthly salary is ₹1,00,000, your employer might cut ₹10,000 as TDS and pay it directly to the government on your behalf.

Importance of TDS Statement Status

Checking your TDS status is essential because it helps ensure the tax deduction by your employer or anyone else is actually credited to your account. If something is wrong, it can create problems during tax filing, and you might even end up paying extra tax or facing penalties.

For example, if your employer cuts ten thousand rupees as TDS but does not deposit it with the government, you may have to pay tax again on the same income.

Prerequisites for TDS Statement Status

Before you check your TDS status, make sure you have a few things ready:

  1. PAN Card: You need your PAN number to view your TDS details.
  2. Internet Connection: keep your internet connection active to open the Income Tax website.
  3. TDS Details: Your employer, bank or anyone who deducted TDS should have shared your details through Form 26AS or a TDS certificate.

Alternative Ways to Check TDS Statement Status

Apart from checking on the Income Tax portal, you can also see your TDS details in these two ways:

  • TRACES (TDS Reconciliation Analysis and Correction Enabling System)
Go to the TRACES website and log in with your PAN. You can view your TDS information there.
  • TDS certificates
Your employer or the person who deducted tax will give you Form 16 or Form 16A. These forms show how much TDS was deducted and deposited.

Steps for Rectifying Incorrect TDS Entries

If you notice any mismatch in your TDS details, you can follow these steps:

  • First, inform your employer or the person who deducted the TDS about the incorrect entry.
  • They will need to update the TDS return with the correct information.
  • After the correction is made, check your Form 26AS to confirm that the update has been reflected.

For example, if your employer has reported a higher TDS amount than what was actually deducted, request them to correct it on the portal.
